FRED CADMAN
22 August 1921 to 24 September 2005
Fred was born on 22 August 1921 to Francis and Fred Cadman. He was born in Rotherham and went to school there (when he managed to get there – often setting off but not always managing to arrive there). After his father’s death, Francis remarried Irvin and the family moved to Wath. He had two sisters, Mona and Rita. Rita died at the age of 9 and Mona died about 3 years ago.
He married Annie on 19 May 1945 and had 4 children –Terry, Pat, Alan and Lynn. Unfortunately, Alan died in 1992. Annie and Fred helped raise their nephew, Mick, and he became a part of the family. They celebrated their Diamond Wedding earlier this year and, despite his health, Fred was adamant he would make it to this day!
Fred worked as a miner as a youth and then went on to work as a long distance lorry driver in the heavy haulage industry and travelled all over the UK. There was no vehicle he couldn’t drive and he could find his way to anywhere in the country (with the exception of Blackpool – on family holidays he always took a wrong turning and went round roundabouts twice). Annie always knew when he was lost – he never said anything but just played with his ear lobe. He then became a motor mechanic until he retired in 1982.
He loved all kinds of sport and was an amateur boxer for a few years and even won a few matches – most in local punch-ups. He was a keen footballer and ran the local youth club team. He coached the first ladies team in Wath and formed a 5-a-side team which played in the Rotherham league. He organised ladies football matches to raise money for children’s charities. He actively encouraged Terry, Pat, Alan and Terry’s wife, Christine, to play football for his teams – Lynn was too young but she was the mascot for the ladies team and went along to all the matches with the family. He was a keen fisherman before his deteriorating health meant he could no longer carry his fishing tackle. He was always an avid reader of cowboy books, in his younger years often reading and letting the kids run riot while Annie was doing the family shopping. Latterly, the family affectionately referred to his reading as ‘shooting cowboys’.
Fred and Annie enjoyed dancing and they won championships at Wath Empire Hall where they danced every week. They enjoyed attending the Westville club, where they made a great many friends. Fred was a member of the club for many years and he was a committee member for over 30 years. In 2000, he received a long service award for his services to the club from the Club and Institute Union. Fred had many ‘adopted’ kids among the members of the Westville, especially the lady bingo players. He called the bingo numbers at the club for many years until his health deteriorated over his last year.
Over the past 3 years, Fred’s health declined greatly and he spent a lot of time in Rotherham hospital and staff got to know and love him. Ward Sisters would organise for him to be transferred to their ward because they claimed he was a joy to nurse – even when seriously ill. He called the staff on Wards A4 and A5 his ‘Angels’. He would raise hell if they called him Mr Cadman and told them “my name is Fred”. He was well known with the tea ladies for saying “no sugar in my tea, just stir it with your finger it will be sweet enough”.
He loved all animals and brought some for the kids without Annie’s knowledge. He encouraged Terry to breed budgies and the family always had some form of animal life around. He once very nearly bought a monkey for Lynn but Annie intervened. Over the past 8 years, he has enjoyed the love of Lynn’s dog Winston who misses him greatly.
Fred loved all his children dearly and nothing was too much trouble for them. He spent lots of time repairing trolleys which Terry, Pat and Alan, together with other kids from Hall Drive, had broken when racing, repairing Terry’s scooters and motorbikes and showing Lynn how to do her own car maintenance. He taught all the family to drive – which is probably why he lost most of his hair!
⋱♰⋰ Still Here ⋱♰⋰
⋱♰⋰ Today I knew you were lonely,
I was watching while you cried;
I wanted to reach out and touch you,
Let you know I was by your side ⋱♰⋰
⋱♰⋰ It hurts me to see you grieving,
For I know you can't understand.
If only just for one moment,
You could feel the touch of my hand ⋱♰⋰
⋱♰⋰Beyond the veil that divides us
I'm only a heartbeat away;
Though my life on earth is over
I am walking beside you each day ⋱♰⋰
⋱♰⋰ As the sun rises in the morning,
I can still share the beauty with you,
Here in my heavenly home,
I see from a different view ⋱♰⋰
⋱♰⋰ I hear your sighs in the evening
When a myriad of stars are aglow;
I sense that you are remembering,
The love that we shared long ago ⋱♰⋰
⋱♰⋰ Tonight when sleep beckons you
In dreams you'll sense me draw near.
When the sun rises in the morning,
Remember my love I'm still here ⋱♰⋰

Remembering
Go ahead and mention my loved one,
The one that died, you know.
Don't worry about hurting me further.
The depth of my pain doesn't show.
Don't worry about making me cry
I'm already crying inside.
Help me to heal by releasing
The tears that I try to hide.
I'm hurt when you just keep silent,
Pretending they didn't exist,
I'd rather you mention my loved one
Knowing that they have been missed.
You asked me how I was doing
I say "pretty good" or "fine"
But healing is something ongoing
I feel it will take a lifetime.

xxx A positive start to the New Year xxx
Beginning Today
Beginning today I will no longer worry about yesterday.
It is in the past and the past will never change.
Only I can change by choosing to do so.
Beginning today I will no longer worry about tomorrow.
Tomorrow will always be there,
Waiting for me to make the most of it.
But I cannot make the most of tomorrow
Without first making the most of today.
Beginning today I will look in the mirror and
I will see a person worthy of my respect and admiration.
This capable person looking back at me is
Someone I enjoy spending time with and
Someone I would like to get to know better.
Beginning today I will cherish each moment of my life.
I value this gift bestowed upon me in this world and
I will unselfishly share this gift with others.
I will use this gift to enhance the lives of others.
Beginning today I will take a moment to step off the beaten path
And to revel in the mysteries I encounter.
I will face challenges with courage and determination.
I will overcome what barriers there may be,
Which hinder my quest for growth and self-improvement.
Beginning today I will take life one day at a time, one step at a time.
Discouragement will not be allowed to taint my positive self-image,
My desire to succeed or my capacity to love.
Beginning today I walk with renewed faith in human kindness.
Regardless of what has gone before,
I believe there is hope for a brighter and better future.
Beginning today I will open my mind and my heart.
I will welcome new experiences, I will meet new people.
I will not expect perfection from myself nor anyone else;
Perfection does not exist in an imperfect world.
But, I will applaud the attempt to overcome human foibles.
Beginning today I am responsible for my own happiness
And I will do things that make me happy . . .
Admire the beautiful wonders of nature, listen to my favorite music,
Pet a kitten or a puppy, soak in a bubble bath.
Pleasure can be found in the most simple of gestures.
Beginning today I will learn something new;
I will try something different;
I will savour all the various flavors life has to offer.
I will change what I can and the rest I will let go.
I will strive to become the best me I can possibly be.
Beginning today . . .
And every day for the rest of my life . . .

Can't Breathe For The First Time
by Jennifer Babcock 2004
I watched you walk out that door,
I didn't know that it would be the last time
The heat of the summer is gone,
and the chill of the winter is here
Every breath I take, and every tear I make
Turns to ice as it hits the ground...
I can't breathe for the first time
Everytime I close my eyes, I see your face.
Reminds me that I am alone in this place
Your memory still so deep in my mind,
Makes sanity so hard to find.
Weird how you can watch something change,
and it all seems so fast,
What happened today has already changed into the past.
Photographs of you hanging on the walls,
Everything I can remember ended so fast,
All I have left are my memories....
I can't breathe for the first time.
Everytime I close my eyes, I see your face.
Reminds me that I am alone in this place.
Your memory still so deep in my mind,
Makes sanity so hard to find.

One At Rest
(Author Unknown)
Think of me as one at rest,
for me you should not weep
I have no pain no troubled thoughts
for I am just asleep
The living thinking me that was,
is now forever still
And life goes on without me now,
as time forever will.
If your heart is heavy now
because I've gone away
Dwell not long upon it friend
For none of us can stay
Those of you who liked me,
I sincerely thank you all
And those of you who loved me,
I thank you most of all.
And in my fleeting lifespan,
as time went rushing by
I found some time to hesitate,
to laugh, to love, to cry
Matters it now if time began
If time will ever cease?
I was here, I used it all,
and now I am at peace.

For Just A Moment
Copyright 1995 by Brenda Penepent
For just a moment
I’m sure I saw
a flicker of light ahead.
Perhaps it was your smile.
Though past now, remembered,
in my heart
like the small sound of
a butterfly passing by.
No night
is so dark
that can not be brightened
with memories of you.
Raindrops carry along
your blessings from heaven
to wash away my tears
and bring me hope anew.

••• The Spirit of Christmas •••
The spirit of Christmas is often found
In things that we can see
A street of gold and silver
A sparkling Christmas tree.
It’s found in quiet serenity
Of freshly fallen snow
In lights upon the river
A candles’ gentle glow.
It’s found in pretty presents
And treasures of delight
In stories told of Christmas’ past
On cold and wintry nights.
It’s found in Yuletide carolers
Who stand out in the street
And spread good cheer and tidings
To everyone they meet.
It’s found in bustling cities
As choirs get up to sing
In sleepy little villages
Where lonely church bells ring.
It’s found within a beggar’s heart
Who kindly takes the time
To help a cold and hungry child
By sharing his last dime.
It’s found within the prisons walls
And temples made of stone
It’s found within the orphanages
And in the nursing homes.
It’s found within the wise men
Who brought gifts from far away
And the eastern star that led them
To the stable where He lay.
It’s found within the Spirit
This gift from up above
It’s filled with pure salvation
And wrapped in His sweet love.
It’s even found in old St. Nick
As he kneels down to pray
To Jesus, Blessed Redeemer
Who was born on Christmas day.

Angel Of Christmas Cheer
I hear a flutter in the breeze
There is snow upon the ground
All the leaves have fallen
Not a single one to be found.
So it makes me ponder
On this lovely winter day
Could it be an angel?
In the snow at play?
I go ahead and build my snowman
I work with cheerful hands
Carrot nose and button eyes
To make him look so grand.
I think I hear a little giggle
A flutter in the breeze
I look up to see, who might be here
But it's, just my snowman and me.
With all this Yule time cheer
On my face I have a smile
Soon we will be singing songs
As we gather around the fire.
It's nearly time to go in
I'll soon be snug in bed
As I dream of sugar plums
Dancing in my head.
Now it's Christmas Morning
We gather around the tree
I look out the frost window
My eyes just can't believe!
A beautiful smile on my snowman
My hands could have never achieved
I walked the same snow prints
That I had made that very night.
Only one going to it, one coming back
As I look at the snowy base
I see a folded note;
Looking so mystified
With wonder on my face,
As I read the words
This is what it said,
"I enjoyed the wonderful evening
Seeing the joy your heart does hold,
But, there is more to this message
To you, that must be told.
Always remember...
The reason for this season
The night that Christ was born
All those that gathered
In the manger long ago.
Always remember His love and giving ways
Then you can have Christmas, every single day
And if you don't mind...
I would love to come next year
At the bottom was signed,
"Your Angel of Christmas Cheer"

One Little Candle
By Carol Dunn
It’s just one little candle
One tiny flickering light
A challenge to the darkness
A small beacon in the night.
It could be just a gentle touch
A reminder that you’re there
Or a warm, compassionate hug
That shows you understand and care.
Sometimes it only takes your smile
To encourage and uplift
And should that smile lead to laughter
You’ve shared a special gift.
There’s comfort in shared silence
Or in a softly spoken word
Or in taking time to listen
To feelings that must be heard.
Yes, it’s just one little candle
Softly glowing in the night
But it can overcome the darkness
If it will only share it’s light.
Just one candle at a time
Each one giving from its heart
Reaching out to those nearby
Asking them to do their part.
To make sure the light keeps growing
Reaching out to those in sorrow
Offering comfort, warmth and hope
Strength and courage for tomorrow.
♥ I Believe ♥
(Written By Skip Ewing and Donny Keyes Copyright 2002)
(Song performed by Diamond Rio)
Every now and then
Soft as breath upon my skin
I feel you come back again
And it's like you haven't been gone
A moment from my side
Like the tears were never cried
Like the hands of time are holding you and me
And with all my heart I'm sure
We're closer than we ever were
I don't have to hear or see
I've got all the proof I need
There are more than angels watching over me
I believe, I believe
That when you die your life goes on
It doesn't end here when you're gone
Every soul is filled with light
It never ends and if I'm right
Our love can even reach across eternity
I believe, I believe
Forever you're a part of me
Forever in the heart of me
I will hold you even longer if I can
The people who don't see the most
Say that I believe in ghosts
And if that makes me crazy
Then I am
'Cause I believe, oh I believe
There are more than angels watching over me
I believe, oh I believe
Every now and then
Soft as breath upon my skin
I feel you come back again
And I believe
'Cause I believe, oh I believe.
